Frequently asked questions
Will I get thrown straight into the OR on my own?
No! All new Surgical tech employees go through an orientation period that lasts at least 3 months upon their start date, rotating through each specialty with a preceptor.
Am I eligible to sit for certification?
Although you are not eligible to sit for NBSTSA certification without completing a two year associates degree program, you will be eligible to sit for (TS-C) offered by the NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) after having relevant work experience (3 years)! Another option for certification without obtaining a degree is NCST.
Does Alabama require NBSTSA certification to be employeed as a Surgical Tech?
No! Alabama as a state does not require certification. In fact, I didn't find out until after I went through all the trouble/time/money to become certified/renew that most local hospitals hardly want to compensate even $1 per hour for being NBSTSA certified.
Which states do require NBSTSA certification? VERY few.
Conneticut, Idaho, Indiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee.
Do note that sometimes, with a reference of experience you will still land a job at facilities that state they "prefer" NBSTSA certification, it is dependent on hospital policy and experience.
Will I need BLS certification?
Yes. You will need to become BLS certified, you can either do that at a local community college, AHA, or usually within 30-90 days of obtaining employment at the facility, dependent upon hospital policy. You will have a better chance of obtaining employment if you already have your BLS certification.
